[By Susan Price] Socialist Alliance is standing longtime left activist Margarita Windisch in the federal seat of Wills. Our overall campaign theme is ‘People before profit; Take back the wealth’ — nationalise the banks and the mining and energy sectors to tackle our desperately urgent environmental and social problems.
More than 90 people attended the campaign launch on Saturday, August 10 at the Anatolian Cultural Centre in Coburg. Windisch was toasted by public housing activist Kate Borland (also standing as an independent in the seat of Melbourne); PNG community advocate Gabriel Ovia; feminist activist Amelia Taylor; Socialist Alliance candidate for Corio, Sue Bull; and others.
Socialist Alternative member and performance poet, Ben Solah, showcased his powerful spoken word poetry, and local Latin Reggae group Divina Providencia had people up dancing through the evening. The Save the Planet candidate for Wills, Dean O’Callaghan, also attended the launch.
Local ‘citizen journalist’ John Englart filmed and reported on the event. You can can view his report and clips at no fibs.
Over $1300 was raised on the night and several people volunteered to help out with letterboxing and on polling day.
Union donation helps boost campaign reach
Thanks to a generous donation from the Electrical Trades Union, for the first time we have been able to take out paid election advertising in the Moreland Leader. The striking ad, designed by Katherine Bradstreet, has already drawn interest in our campaign and will appear in four issues of the newspaper.
Can you help with the socialist campaign? We need help with letterboxing, polling day and a host of other things. To get in touch please call our office on 9639 8622 or Susan on 0400 320 602.
