Report on August 10 Council Meeting

[By Sue Bolton] Issues that were discussed at the August 10 meeting of the Moreland Council included:

Development in Moreland – A report was presented which showed that a record number of planning permit applications were received and determined in the 2015-2016 financial year. Over the past 5 years planning permit application numbers have increased by 31%. There has also been an increase in enforcement cases against builders for breaches of permits, but there is still a big backlog. Continue reading

Refugee rally on August 27

unnamedOn August 27 there is a rally organised by the Refugee Action Collection to shut the refugee detention centres all over Australia and let the refugees into Australia. There will be speakers like Adam Bandt, Greens MP for Melbourne; Pamela Curr from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre; Jane Willey, an ex-teacher from Nauru and the author of some of the leaked files from Nauru; and others to be announced. Don Dale atrocity shows we must reject the major parties’ law and order’ agenda

[By Sue Bolton] There is ample evidence of the criminality of the prison officers, their bosses and the Northern Territory government ministers for charges to be laid over the horror inflicted on Aboriginal kids in custody at the Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre. It’s not just a question of proper “training”and “processes” for the prison guards. The horror we saw in the ABC’s Four Corner‘s program on July 25 is the outcome of the law and order agenda of “lock em’ up and throw away the key”.
