[By Sue Bolton] Just before the May council meeting, it was announced that Moreland had been able to negotiate with Melbourne Water to buy the land that forms Hopetoun Avenue Park Reserve in Brunswick West. I played a part in saving the park in 2016 when Melbourne Water was seeking ministerial fast tracking to rezone the park to residential. I moved a motion at the August 2016 meeting for council to oppose the fast tracking and to request that the land be gifted to the council to be retained as public open space. Council’s strong opposition to fast tracking the sale helped stop that process. Further work since the council election by councillor Dale Martin convinced the council to buy the land to guarantee that it could be retained as a park. It was especially important that this piece of land be retained as a public park so that it can become part of a Moonee Ponds linear park in the future.
