Concern about former NuFarm Chemical site in Fawkner

A resident has approached me with concerns about the former NuFarm Chemical site in McBryde Street, Fawkner. The site was previously used for the manufacture of toxic chemicals, including Agent Orange. The chemicals, in turn, may have possibly contaminated the soil in surrounding areas. The site was never decontaminated.

When the site was closed a clay cap was laid over the soil in an attempt to contain any potentially dangerous contamination into the future. However, there has been recent activity at the site including the construction of a shed with what appears to be a concrete base.

Residents are concerned that the construction activity has disturbed the toxic soil underneath the clay cap.

I approached the council to investigate whether council approval was given for construction and, if so, what safeguards were put in place to ensure the health and safety of surrounding residents.

Moreland Socialists looks forward to updating residents on this very serious community safety matter as more details are made available.
